FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CALIFORNIA ASSEMBLYMAN AND PROTEGE OF HARVEY MILK TO SPEAK AT TRUMAN DAY DINNER
Knoxville, TN - August 24, 2015
On September 11, 2015 at 6:30pm, the Knox County Democratic Party will be hosting its annual “Truman Day” fundraiser at the Foundry at World's Fair Park. Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero will be the master of ceremonies and California Assemblyman and LGBT activist Tom Ammiano will be the key-note speaker.
Mr. Ammiano has been a community leader in San Francisco for forty years, coming out as its first openly gay teacher and helping organize against the initiative to ban gay teachers in California with Harvey Milk in 1977. From 1990-1994 he served as a member of the San Francisco Board of Education, and in 2008, he was elected to the CA State Assembly. He strives to give a voice to underrepresented communities through reform on many issues such as affordable housing, LGBTQ rights, education, labor, immigration, prisons and marijuana use/legalization. In addition, Mr. Ammiano has been a standup comic since 1980 when he pioneered gay comedy night at the Valencia Rose Cabaret in San Francisco.
Mr. Ammiano will speak about his experiences in working with different groups, from teachers, environmentalists, unions, and the LGBT community , to build progressive political power in San Francisco. The KCDP feels that lessons can be drawn from this history of coalition building that would be applicable to our work here in East Tennessee.
Tickets are $60 and includes a sit down meal. Tickets can be purchased at knoxvilledemocrats.org.
